Academy of Intentional Magic
The Academy of Intentional Magic grew not from a plan, but from paying attention to what was already trying to become.
For years, in workshops, readings, conversations, and quiet exchanges, people kept bringing not just their poems, not just their writing, but their whole, complicated, creative lives. The questions were never only about craft. They were also about process, and about attention. About how to stay awake in a noisy world. About how to live in relationship with language, with images, with sound.
We exist to make a home for that larger conversation.
The Academy of Intentional Magic is a place to gather around:
Writing and language
Visual art and ways of seeing
Music and listening
And the living world we are always in relationship with
Here, we value:
Work-in-progress as much as finished work
Attention over performance
Curiosity over certainty
And the slow, human pace at which real conversations and real communities actually form
At its heart, AIM is an experiment in attention.
It’s a place to practice:
Listening more deeply
Making more honestly
And living more awake to the world and to one another
We’re interested in art not as product, but as relationship: a way of being in conversation with what is other, with what is unknown, with what is still becoming.
We’re also interested in the everyday forms of this practice: the walks, the meals, the gardens, the notebooks, the half-finished drafts, the music that keeps us company, the small rituals that help us stay oriented.
Because art does not live apart from life. It grows inside it.
The AIM community is supported by its community members, its workshops, by our publishing arm, and by grants.
The goal is not growth for its own sake, but sustainability: keeping the lights on, keeping the garden tended, and keeping the space human-scale and humane.
The Academy of Intentional Magic is not a finished idea. It’s a living one.
Like any real habitat, it will change as people inhabit it. It will grow in some directions, and stay small in others. It will be shaped less by strategy than by attention.
That’s not a bug. That’s the whole point.
